PRESERVED & STORED AIRCRAFT IN CHESHIRE - their locations are marked in the Spotting in the UK download

  • XH312 Vampire is stored in the undergrowth in a garden under a tarpaulin with booms removed, next to the church and visible from the churchyard in Dodleston. Due to vandalism, only the wings and fuselage (minus the booms) are intact, the nose having been completely destroyed by fire. Due to the heavy undergrowth, the Vampire is only just visible. Last reported September 2012

  • ZE691 Harrier is preserved at Classic Autos, Woodford Park Industrial Estate off the A54 roundabout in the southwest of Winsford town. Last reported April 2012

  • 9198M (XS641) Andover fuselage is at a car dismantlers yard on Moston Road in Sandbach - it's roaded in to Glastonbury every year. Last reported September 2012

  • G-RORY FWP-149 is stored outside at the Marthall-Pear Tree Farm airfield and is the only resident. Head east through Marthall on the A537 and after the crossroads, take the first left into the farm. Follow to the end and it's on the right. If there's no access, the next track on the left leads directly to it. If there's no access here either, head back to the crossroads and turn right onto Sandle Bridge Lane. After the left-right S bend, turn right down a track at the staggered crossroads and G-RORY is visible across the field. Last reported January 2012

    ASHCROFT AIRFIELD (EGCR)

    Spotting Info
Head south out of Winsford town on the B5074. Take the fourth right turn onto Darnhall School Lane and follow until a sharp left bend. Shortly after this, turn right onto Hall Lane, follow the road over a stream (which is on a fairly sharp right hand bend), then through a sharp right, then left hand bend and then take the next right for the airfield. Ask for access, the owner is friendly. One large main hangar, with possibly an individual hangar nearby. A very short drive up the track looks like another individual hangar. If you carry on up the track past the airfield, you'll drive alongside the runway of Winsford-Ashcroft Farm strip, full details below.

    HOOTON PARK-THE AEROPLANE COLLECTION

    Spotting Info
PLEASE NOTE: There are currently no aircraft on site due to repairs to the roof of their hangar. Please contact the Hooton Park Trust via site below for futher information
Exit the M53 at J6, turn right at the roundabout onto South Road and it's on the left and signposted. The Hooton Park Trust has agreed to let Dave Arkle run pre-booked guided tours of this very private site once a month on a Sunday morning, usually the first Sunday of each month but you'll need to check this, and check there's room on the tour. The tour lasts about an hour, it's very popular and well worth it to see the various aircraft preserved or on rebuild. No cost but donations are encouraged. As most of the stored airframes are privately owned we are reliant on the generosity of the owners allowing us access. Please respect this and offer Dave every courtesy for running these tours. If you wish to book a tour please either email Dave or if you prefer, phone on 0161 969 2697.

    LYMM DAM-YEW TREE FARM AIRFIELD

    Spotting Info
Head east through Lymm town on the A56 and over the Lymm Dam. Take the first right onto Crouchley Lane and follow it round a left and right bend. At the next sharp left bend, turn right onto a track and follow to the end for the strip. One main hangar with gaps to look through if it's shut. There's also a lean-to hangar on the other side of this one and and a single hangar opposite, also with gaps.

    SANDBACH-ARCLID GREEN AIRFIELD

    Spotting Info
Exit the M6 at J17 and head east on the A534 to Congleton. The road winds around for a bit, then at the bottom of the valley turn right down Hemmingshaw Lane, signed to an industrial estate. Ignore the left fork and carry straight on for a couple of minutes. Rough track with potholes takes you straight to the strip. Friendly, ask for access. If there's no one there, all inmates of the hangar can be easily read off through gaps in doors and the big gap at the bottom.

    STRETTON AIRFIELD

    Spotting Info
No access from either of the motorways, you'll need to head southeast away from Appleton Thorn village on Barleycastle Lane that runs past industrial estates. Head over the M56 and after a long left hand bend, turn right into the farm area and buildings. Ask at reception for access, very friendly, they'll need to show you where the aircraft are. In addition, Shadow G-MTHV can be seen by turning right out of the farm, and right again into Crowley Lane. Continue past the end of the runway, round to the right and onto the old taxiway. Once you're alongside the runway, turn around and head back very slowly, looking behind the farm. It's folded up on a trailer.

    WAVERTON-GUY LANE FARM AIRFIELD

    Spotting Info
Head east out of Waverton village on Guy Lane, past the golf course on your right and take the next track on the right, it runs down the golf course boundary. Take care as you drive through the farm to the strip - it's the home of two Rottweilers that attack cars on the drive and enjoy crunching plastic wing mirrors. There is another entrance to the east that avoids driving through the farm and is probably preferable. Pass the farm on the right, take the next right (on the left hand bend) then take the next track on right. This leads to the windsock and a small lockup. You can drive to the hangar from here but keep a good lookout - the runway is on your left and aircraft taxi along here to get to and from the hangar.

    WINSFORD-ASHCROFT FARM AIRFIELD

    Spotting Info
Head south out of Winsford town on the B5074. Take the fourth right turn onto Darnhall School Lane and follow until a sharp left bend. Shortly after this, turn right onto Hall Lane, follow the road over a stream (which is on a fairly sharp right hand bend), then through a sharp right, then left hand bend and then take the next right. The first hangar and runways you get to on the left are Ashcroft airfield, full details above. Carry on up the track, you'll drive alongside the runway to the strip and fork right just before you reach the farm courtyard. If there's no one here you can try asking the farmer for access but he's often too busy for a tour.

    WOOLSTON MOSS AIRFIELD

    Spotting Info
Head east through Woolston village on the A57 and at the big roundabout that joins the M6, head straight over to take you over the M6. At the next roundabout take the third exit to stay on the A57 towards Rixton. You'll pass a field on the left, take the next left turn down a track. Follow this and the track will bend slightly right, you will then see the hangar on the left. Friendly airfield, ask for access. If you're heading south on the M6, the hangar is easily visible and faces the motorway. If any aircraft are parked outside and/or the hangar doors are open, this will be obvious and you can then take the very next exit off the M6 to go and take a look.
