  • XR747 Lightning cockpit is preserved at Treworgans, near the caravan park. Head north out of Cubert village towards Crantock and at the crossroads about a mile up the road, turn left signed Treworgans Holiday Park. Just before the road bends right, it's on the right alongside the foliage

  • XR755 Lghtning is preserved in the grounds of a house just south of Callington off the road to Newbridge and St. Ive. The Lightning can be seen as you drive up the long drive but prior permission is required, especially if you require photographs

    BODMIN AIRFIELD - TWR 122.7

    Spotting Info
Leave Bodmin town north and join A30. Take next right turn (about 1 mile) for airfield. Should be visible from A30. Friendly, ask in the tower for access. The guys in the maintenance sometimes deny access but you can log from the entrance and side windows. As you drive towards the car park, there is a much older building set up from the more modern hangars near the tower. This building is often closed but there are aircraft in long term storage in here and there are gaps to see through and log them.

    CULDROSE AIR BASE & MUSEUM

    Spotting Info
Take the A3083 south out of Helston town towards Lizard. Base is on the left after a mile. Opposite the base entrance, just beyond the overpass, is WF225 Sea Hawk gate guard and its location is marked in the Spotting in the UK download. For the viewing area, head south past the main entrance on the A3083 and at the roundabout turn left onto the B3293 signposted to St Keverne. Towards the end of the long right bend, turn left signed "RNAS Culdrose Public Viewing Area" and after a sharp right bend turn left, and left again into the viewing area. Most ramps on the west side of the runway are not easily visible, although a pair of binoculars will usually get the squadron codes. You also have good views of the eastern side ramps (Merlins and the occasional Harrier), and all main runway movements.

    DAVIDSTOW MOOR AIRFIELD

    Spotting Info
Head northeast out of Camelford on the A39, and after passing the left turn B3314 to Rockhead, take the next right. Follow the road and you drive through the old taxiway and onto the old airfield. Take the next sharp left to go back on yourself, drive over the runway and taxiway and turn right to take you round to the hangars and office. Friendly, ask for access. Most of the buildings have microlights in and gaps to look through if locked so have a good look round.

A very short drive away is the Davidstow Airfield & Cornwall at War Museum. Where you turned right to go round to the hangars, if you carry straight on, the museum is the third track on the left and is signposted. You'll also see Gannet XG831 preserved outside. If the gate is shut stopping you carrying straight on, you'll need to go back to the A39 and turn right to head north, turn right onto the A395 and right again almost immediately to get on the same road. The museum is then just up on your right. As well as the Gannet, you'll see the cockpit and forward fuselage of Vampire XK627 and 3 drones carrying their military serials.

Spotting in the UK v1.5 - 620+ UK locations, hotels, viewing areas and 170+ wrecks and relics have been plotted on Google Earth's detailed satellite imagery and can be added to your SatNav - click to download. Planning your spotting trip has never been easier. Please read the Download Instructions for example screenshots and further details
    Spotting Info
Head south out of Liskeard on A38 and it's on the right after 3 miles. You'll need to turn right off this busy dual carriageway and there won't be any warning - at the right turn is a brown tourist sign 'Castle Air Charters'. The heliport is adjacent to the A38 to the south side, and as you turn off, you will be greeted by preserved Lightning XS936 on a pole at the entrance (marked in the Spotting in the UK download) and a large collection of second-hand cars (Castle Motors was their original business). Go past the car sales area to the heliport behind. The heliport ramps are easily visible from the adjacent public road, with a low white fence marking the edge. Photography of helicopters on the ramp is simple. Sometimes the hangar doors are open too, particularly in the summer. Castle Air are generally very friendly, and happy to give hangar tours if they have someone available to escort you, though it won't always be possible. Best to visit during the week as they aren't usually open at weekends, ask at reception. They are also happy for you to call in advance and arrange your visit, that way you'll know someone will be available to show you round.

    NEWQUAY AIRPORT

    Spotting Info
Northeast of Newquay off A3059. Northside, there is excellent viewing to the adjacent apron via an 8 foot chain link fence. You can visit the long-term car park as long as you're quick. WL795 Shackleton is the gate guard at the former St. Mawgan air base part of the airport on the south side. Heading east on the A3059, as you head past the runway 30 approach lights, fork left as the road bends right. Here you'll find a private collection on display, containing BAPC-268 Spitfire replica marked "PL279" and WD954 Canberra nose. N3290 Spitfire replica is often also here and on a trailer - it's a travelling exhibit. This collection and the Shackleton are all marked in the Spotting in the UK download.

    PERRANPORTH AIRFIELD - TWR 119.75

    Spotting Info
Heading south on B3285 towards Trevellas you will see the airfield on your right. As you come in to the town, turn right and entrance is on the right. Very friendly, ask in the tower for access, a hi-viz jacket isn't usually required. They usually escort you to the hangar, but if they don't make sure you ask at the hangar as well. There are two old gliders stored in the old glider hangar on the other side of the airfield - one, BGA1626 coded CLK, is easily visible.

    PREDANNACK AIR BASE

    Spotting Info
South of Mullion town on the A3083. In the south of the base is the Fleet Air Arm Fire School, with a fair number of frames including WT308 Canberra, XP137 Wessex, XS520 Wessex, XS738 Dominie, XS885 Wessex, XX845 Jaguar, XZ570 Seaking and 8 Harriers. To see these frames, head south on the A3083 past the main gate and then turn right to Kynance Cove. The frames can be seen from the Kynance Cove car park and this read that leads to it, though heat haze may prevent you reading the serials. Make notes as detailed as possible as there are photos to tie up your sightings. No walking along coastal paths is necessary if you do not wish, as even though you're a long way from the aircraft, they can all be seen. Please bear in mind though, that the frames get moved around from time to time and so may not all be visible. Some of the Harriers may also be parked on the main base area and taxiways, rather than in this southern area.
