CARLISLE AIRPORT - APP 123.6

Spotting Info
On the A689 northeast of town, follow the signs. Avro Vulcan XJ823 is on your left as you drive in. Ask at the operations office in the main building for access to the hangars - it's the small white building opposite the tower and terminal: the building is half landside and half airside from the outside, and there is a little blue door which leads to an operations desk. There's always someone about there to ask. You'll need photo ID and a hi-viz jacket, access should then be granted to any open hangars and sometimes you'll be escorted round. Occasionally access is refused, possibly due to a rare biz or military movement. If this is the case, you can ask at each flying club and hangar separately and may get access. Solway Aviation Museum is based at the airport. Open every weekend April-October, Bank Holidays and Fridays during school holidays, from 1030-1700 with the Vulcan open from 1330-1615, though a lot of the exhibits are parked outside and easily logged. Admission is £4.50 for adults and £2.50 for children.

LANGWATHBY HELIPAD

Spotting Info
Just south of Langwathby village alongside the B6412, any helicopters parked outside can be seen from the B6412 - there's a pull in adjacent to the landing pad. They are also easily logged from the train. The entrance to the helipad is the same as the chicken farm should you need enter.

SPADEADAM RANGE STORED

Spotting Info
The range is in the northeastern part of Cumbria, and is quite a way northeast of the RAF Station buildings. The stored Mysteres and T33s are on a mock-up airfield and used as practice targets. They are not visible from any public road and effort to see them by land involves trespassing regularly patrolled RAF property, and by 'land' I mean extremely wet, boggy, marshland. Do not attempt this. The only way to see these aircraft is to fly over on a Sunday when the range is shut and you can get down to see them properly. They used to do tours of the station, and while they didn't include the mock airfield as it's not easily accessible, it did include visiting and photographing their resident Mi-24, which presumably is close to the station buildings. There is also a lone Su-22 stored here.
