    CAUNTON-KNAPTHORPE LODGE AIRFIELD

    Spotting Info
DO NOT turn up unannounced, you WILL be turned away. Ring the owner beforehand to arrange a suitable time but this only depends on whether he is available at the time. He is fed up with too many people turning up without warning. I had listed the owner's details but too many people are ringing up to book a visit and then failing to turn up without letting the owner know. Of course this would upset and frustrate anyone, and the owner has since stopped allowing access to his airfield and can be very unpleasant to anyone turning up with prior arrangement, so I have removed his details. Village is northwest of Newark-on-Trent just off A616. On A616, at crossroads below the village (on the map), head south towards Knapthorpe and Hockerton (hopefully signed). Strip is on left after some sharp bends.

    GAMSTON AIRFIELD (EGNE) - A/G 130.475

Spotting in the UK v1.5 - 620+ UK locations, hotels, viewing areas and 170+ wrecks and relics have been plotted on Google Earth's detailed satellite imagery and can be added to your SatNav - click to download. Planning your spotting trip has never been easier. Please read the Download Instructions for example screenshots and further details

    Spotting Info
East of Gamston village on the B6387, these viewing spots are marked in the Spotting in the UK download. Access airside not allowed but the views from below the tower are good enough to log the majority of aircraft parked outside and there should be views at either end of the hangars. You can log all aircraft parked to the left of the tower but only two thirds of aircraft parked outside. You can see most of the airfield from a road that leads to an industrial area on the south side - turn right out of the airfield entrance towards the A1 and take the first right after about half a mile. Follow the track over the rise, onto the old perimeter track and down to the industrial estate for views across. You can actually sit on the centre line about 30 yards from the current threshold. Brick Yard Road runs along the north west perimeter of the airport - turn right out of the airport entrance or the industrial estate and head west on the A1 to Worksop/Doncaster. Head past the village of Elkesley and still in the 50mph zone, take the next right, crossing the A1 southbound lane. This is after the slip road that allows a 180 turn onto the southbound carriage. Down Jockey Lane for a bit and it becomes Brick Yard Road, keep looking right for good views of the ramp and in to some of the hangars. If you're heading south on the A1, take the first left as you come in to the 50mph zone for Jockey Lane/Brick Yard Road. Keep on this road, and after the sharp left bend, park on the right in a gateway, a bit of walking from here should get you a few more. G-CCHE Da40 is on the fire dump near the VOR - if you haven't arranged a tour, turn left out of the airport entrance, and turn left on the right hand bend down a track. Looking through the trees, you should be able to see G-CCHE.

    Airfield Tours Info
Phone beforehand to arrange a hangar tour with Peter Green of ALH Skytrain. This needs to be done to make sure he is free to escort you round. £5 donation per person to the Wishing Well childrens charity and you will need ID, passport or photocard driving licence. Phone 01777 838202 ALH Skytrain. He only works on Tuesdays and Thursdays, therefore he can only be contacted and conduct the tours on these days, so factor this into your trip. He also prefers there are at least 3 or 4 people at a time to make it worthwhile as there's a lot of walking involved. The tour is well worth it, especially with the numbers of DA40s through here at the moment, but you must be escorted round and photographs are allowed. You are not allowed round on your own and please do not wander off or the tours will be stopped.

Northeast of Newark-on-Trent off A46, follow the signs. There are several frames in storage and not open for public inspection. OXTON AIRFIELD

    Spotting Info
Head west out of Southwell on the B6386. After 2-3 miles you will pass a right hand turn to Halam. Take the next left turn at Hollybeck Nurseries. Follow the road through Bankwood Farm yard and the airfield is on the right. You will see the windsock and an England flag at a mobile home and 2 green hangars. Friendly, ask for access though this has occasionally been denied. Hangars have gaps if locked. About half a mile from the strip there is an electric gate which may be locked shut. If so, you'll have to buzz to ask for access to the airfield. Alternatively, there is access from the west - head northwest out of Thurgarton village. Caution is required as this single lane track is very rough and turning is not easy. The gate may be locked but if it is, it's close to the hangars.

    SOUTH SCARLE-BEECHES FARM AIRFIELD

    Spotting Info
Head north out of Collingham town on South Scarle Road, towards South Scarle village. Turn right at the T-junction at the end of this road and turn right again when the road bends left. Head round the sharp left bend and fork right at the triangle junction. Strip is up on the left. Take care driving to the hangar as you're alongside the runway. Friendly, ask for access. If it's all locked up the hangar has a few holes to log the residents.

    SYERSTON AIRFIELD

    Spotting Info
Head south out of Newark-on-Trent on A46, these viewing spots and stored Jaguars are marked in the Spotting in the UK download. Airfield is on the right hand side of the road just as you come out of a wooded area. Look out for the 'Low Flying Aircraft' sign. You need to turn right here up a small lane - Longhedge Lane. If you miss the sign the next right, approximately 250 yards, is the base entrance. Turn round here, head back towards Newark and take the first left up the side of the field. The lane is a dead end but you can get to a crash gate 100 yards up the lane and view from here. Quite a lot of the field is visible but DO NOT block the gate. Not sure if the lane is private or not but there is a sign which says 'Residents Only' so caution and respect for the residents is advised. There don't seem to be any problems spotting from here. From the top of the lane, there is a better view of the field and a look in to part of the only hangar that is used on the base. Both the stored Jaguars XX739 and XX751 can be seen from this lane but you have to go right to the end to see them. You can try asking at the main gate for a look in the hangar. They'll sometimes allow you round if someone is available to escort you. If you can't get access, companies arrange special tours throughout the year.

Head south out of Newton-on-Trent on A1133 and at the crossroads turn left down Moor Lane (right will take you to South Clifton). Head over the stream and it's on the left. Also an active airstrip with a few residents - anything parked outside can be read from Moor Lane.

    TOLLERTON/NOTTINGHAM AIRPORT - TWR 122.8, A/G 134.875

    Spotting Info
Head north out of Tollerton village on Tollerton Lane and it's on the right after less than a mile. Ask in the tower for access airside and to go in the hangars, though it is often denied - you'll just be allowed to read stuff off and walk along the front of the hangar. You can't see in the main hangar from outside so can only log what is parked outside it. If you're lucky, you'll be escorted round, and you need a hi-viz jacket.

    TRESWELL-FORWOOD FARM AIRFIELD

    Spotting Info
Head west out of Treswell village and past the left turn (Ashley Lane) leading to Woodbeck. After a sharpish left bend the next track on the left leads to the airstrip. If the hangar's locked, there's a gap along the floor, all the way across, for you to log the residents.

    WATNALL-BROOK BREASTING FARM AIRFIELD

    Spotting Info
Home of Phoenix Microlights, the farm is down Narrow Road, which is adjacent to the Horse & Groom Pub in Moorgreen. If arriving from Moorgreen, the strip is on the right-hand side after about two miles and accessed by a right turn off a very sharp left hand bend. If arriving from Watnall, the strip is on the left-hand side after about one and a half miles and accessed by a left turn (effectively straight on), off a very sharp right hand bend. I would recommend approaching from Moorgreen - the road from Watnall is very narrow and blind. There is a windsock visible from the road and a public footpath leads from the farm entrance around the strip and this should enable anything outside to be seen at close quarters, if access is denied. Friendly, ask for access.
