The strip is on the left and you should see Vampire XD445 parked up as you approach. A few hangars contain the residents and the large farm barn behind them. Friendly, ask for access. At the next split in the road turn right and the farm is on the left. Very friendly - ask at the caravan control point, or if no one's there, the farmhouse for access. Sign in the visitors book and you should be ok to walk round. The hangars are on the left with the farm buildings, with the two runways across the road on the right.

    HALFPENNY GREEN/WOLVERHAMPTON AIRPORT (EGBO) - TWR 123.0

    Spotting Info
Just south of Halfpenny Green village, the main entrance is off Crab Lane that runs along the southern end of the airfield. Follow the blue line to the tower and ask for access, they will usually escort you round and a hi-viz jacket may be required.

  • Hangars may be open but if locked you can politely ask the fire service guys, who, if they're not too busy, may oblige. Some hangars, if closed, have gaps to peek through but you'll have to check with your guide if it's ok to do this.

  • A small part of the rear fuselage of G-BYMC PA38 behind the building near the car park and is visible from there.

  • There is an unmarked Fantasy Air Allegro c/n 07-202 in hangar 5 East that will remain unmarked until the CAA approves type certification, despite this being a popular aircraft in other countries.

  • The police helicopter area is out of bounds. There are two helicopter hangars further down from the GA area that also aren't included in the tour. You need to leave the main airfield area and drive round to their hangars. Ask for access - PDG Helicopters are friendly, the other is hit and miss depending on who you speak to. If you can't get access, one of these hangars has windows to look through.

    HIXON STORED

    Spotting Info
At the industrial estate at the old airfield, there are 4 unmarked C130 fuselages due for scrapping - XV197, XV217, XV220 and XV305. To the right of them is the fully marked Sea King ZA135. These are visible from New Road - head south from Stoke on the A51 and turn left onto New Road, it's signposted to Hixon Airfield industrial estate. Just before the road rises to go over the railway line, you can fork left down a slip road, or you can continue over the bridge and pull into the slip road here. Both give views. You can also turn into the estate itself for views.

Almost out of sight from here (you need to know where to look) are the Lynxes and Sea Kings in a separate compound. Follow your nose round the old airfield. You then walk along a Public footpath down one of the old runways for a while and from here the other side of the compound is visible. Against the fence are pretty much complete Lynx XZ721, the stripped but painted hulk of Sea King ZD478 unmarked, stripped fuselages in primer of two unmarked Sea Kings 774 and 775 and Lynxs XZ680 and ZD283.

Alongside the A51, you can see BAPC-220 Spitfire Replica marked as "N3194" parked round the back of Air & Ground's car park. They own a couple of helicopters that are sometimes seen here too. Not friendly to spotters so log from the public footpath.

    OTHERTON-PENKRIDGE AIRFIELD - TWR 129.825

    Spotting Info
Head southeast out of Penkridge town on Otherton Lane and go under the M6. Entrance to the airfield is the first left after the M6 and before an old railway level crossing. A track half a mile or so leads up past some open hangars to the clubhouse. Friendly, ask there for access, and provide your details first before looking round the first set of hangars. Various levels of access are given: sometimes you'll be escorted round so it depends if someone is available, other times you'll be ok to wander freely and sometimes you'll be asked to stay this side and to not go to the far side. Lots of individual hangars with mesh front meaning you can read the regs, but some of the flexwing microlights have their wings on ground upside down meaning you can't see the reg.

    Spotting Info
From the A38 / A5 roundabout outside Lichfield take the A5 towards Cannock. After approximately 500 yards turn left down Streetway Road and pass over the M6 Toll. Shenstone Hall Farm is immediately on the right after the bridge and there is a track directly opposite on the left. There is a gate as you turn left which can be opened, but further down this track is a padlocked gate. If this is locked you can park up, climb the styles and follow the footpath until you come to the hangars. Friendly, ask for access. If hangars are locked up there are gaps to look through.

    STREETHAY-CORK FARM AIRFIELD

    Spotting Info
The only access to this strip is by heading southeast on the A38 towards Lichfield. After the Hilliard's Cross junction, the road runs parallel with the Coventry Canal. There is then a turning for a car park and many barges on the canal. Almost straight after this, there is an exit for Streethay and Lichfield. Come off the A38 and slow right down as the farm is immediately on the left, on the sliproad. As you enter the farm, immediately turn right, then turn left between the buildings. Continue straight ahead and drive over the railway line for the strip. If you're unable to get to the strip, head back and ask for access at the farmhouse.

    TATENHILL AIRFIELD (EGBM) - A/G 118.2

    Spotting Info
North of Yoxall, at A515/B5234 crossroads head west on B5234. After 1 mile airfield is on right. You will see a dozen or so aircraft parked at the west end of the runway on an old taxiway which will be difficult to get from the club area. You need to park up at a gate and walk up and down to get what you can. Ask in clubhouse for access - it's usually not granted by the manager but the ladies in the cafe tend to be much friendlier and are happy for you to walk around if you ask politely. If you can't get access, get what you can from the club area and the dozen or so parked at the west end. If access is granted, you must never go in the hangar, just log from the outside. You can then, on foot, follow the track down to the aircraft parked on the old runway. If there are any you're missing, there's a lay-by just up the B5234 and you can also get on the A515 and head south for views on the left but they'll be almost nose on.

    WHITTINGTON BARRACKS PRESERVED

    Spotting Info
Head southeast out of Lichfield on the A51 towards Tamworth and Whittington Barracks are on the left, a short way after the golf course. The gate guards here are XR601 Scout and XT466 Wessex and are easily visible from this road. ZE413 A109 is also preserved here but further into the base and very difficult to see. To view this, park in the bus stop just up from the gate on the right and walk back towards the gate on the A51. Looking through the trees, the A109 is visible but only during the winter months as the leaves from the trees block it. January and February are considered the best months to see it.

    WYCHNOR HELIPAD

    Spotting Info
Alongside the southbound carriage of the A38, around a mile or so south of the Barton-under-Needwood/Walton-on-Trent junction. Any helicopters outside can be seen from the A38 and you can pull over onto the hard shoulder to read them off as long as you don't hang around. The entrance to the farm and estate appears to be just beyond where the helicopters. Turn left in here, left again and follow to the helicopters.
