BECCLES AIRFIELD (EGSM) - TWR 120.375

    Spotting Info
Head north out of Hulver Street village on the B1127. Take the first right on a long sweeping left bend onto Hulver Road and fork left almost immediately. As the roads bends right the entrance is on the left. Don't follow signs to the airport as it takes you to the old heliport entrance. Very friendly, ask in clubhouse for permission. If it's late in the day and all locked up you can still log a few from outside.

BENTWATERS AIRFIELD & COLD WAR MUSEUM

    Spotting Info
The airfield is off the B1069, east of Woodbridge town. Still an active airfield with the residents in a hangar on the northside. To visit the Bentwaters Cold War Museum, you'll need to stop at the security hut at the main entrance and let them know you're visiting the museum. They'll then give you directions to the museum. It's only open on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month from April-October, 1000-1600, and bank holidays. Entrance is £5. From the museum, or from the roads around this estate, you should have views south to the stored Jaguars with Everett Aero. They're missing their tails so identification isn't easy and I recommend taking photographs from any vantage point you can get. There is an entrance on the south side by that appears to have a security hut also, so access is unlikely.

The last building used to be a hangar, though there may still be one or two in there - this may also be the maintenance hangar. Follow the signs to the car park. The runway is part of the old peri track and you have to drive up this to get to the hangar. Airfield rumoured to be closing down to make way for a wind farm.

LAKENHEATH AIR BASE - TWR 122.1

    Spotting Info
Head north away from Mildenhall air base on the A1065 and it's on the left. The preserved aircraft and viewing spots are marked in the Spotting in the UK download. The based F15s usually fly every weekday from 0900 onwards. If you get there a bit before 9am you won't often have long to wait before the flying begins. Also gets quite a few visitors. There's usually no flying at weekends or anything parked out to view.

  • 54-2269 F-100 is the gate guard marked "63319". Inside the base, with no public access obviously, follow the road straight ahead and you'll reach the Wings of Liberty Memorial Park, with BAPC-269 Spitfire replica marked "BM631", with 63-7419 F-4C marked "65-777", 68-0011 F-111 marked "70-398" and 74-0131 F-15A marked "92-048" together just across the road. These are visible from the Heath just past the radar dish. You'll need somewhere to park but then walk across.

  • Follow the A1065 north round the eastern perimeter and after the long row of trees on your right ends, pull over and park up without blocking this private road. From here you have views of the eastern aprons and you can walk into the field to get a better angle as they're often parked close together.

  • Turn right back on to the A1065 north and turn left shortly after the runway 24 approach lights. Turn left again immediately and shortly on your left is a dedicated car park to view from. Walk out of the viewing area and turn left. You'll see the crash gate in front of you, this gives a slightly different angle onto the airfield. Further on down this track is a disused farm, so you can park here, again it gives you a different angle onto the airfield. Or you can walk the fenceline from the crash gate down to here.

  • If there are any visitors parking on the north side of the base, leave the car park, and turn right onto Wangford Road towards Lakenheath village and away from the A1065. At the end turn left onto the B1112 and head into Lakenheath village. You'll round a sharp left bend, followed by a left and right bend and take the next left onto Wings Road opposite the Post Office. Follow this until you reach the fields and park up in one of the lay-bys. From here you can walk down the road for a view overlooking the whole base. Anything parked by the A1065 on the south and east side is distant from here, but anything parked northside should be readable. The road dips down towards the crash gate so views are no good from down there.

    LOWESTOFT HELIPAD

    Spotting Info
On Waveney Dock off the A12. Not overly busy but might be worth having a look if you're in the area. You can't get to the helipad though, the only place to view is across the bridge on the south side of the harbour, near the RNLI and leisure complex. Just walk along the pier and you can log what's parked up.

    John's Field Viewing Area
PLEASE NOTE: Due to the persistent and heavy rain, John has asked that you keep car traffic in the long grass when arriving and departing to keep the tyres from chewing up the field. If it's too wet, it may be better to park up by the toilet block and walk round to the fence.

Just north of Mildenhall town along the A1101, these viewing spots are marked in the Spotting in the UK download. There is a viewing area off Pollards Lane at The Nook Campsite, known as John's Field, after the gentleman who owns the land and provides this viewing area for us. As you enter the field, pull in on the right where you'll find the box for the entrance fee £1 per person: please leave your payment in the pay box under the canopy of the toilet block, write your car registration down on paper provided and place the paper slip in the money bag with your payment. Non payers are not tolerated and the regulars and locals there do check as they are very keen to keep up the very good relations with the landowner. There are well maintained toilets here and a soft drinks machine. Open daily, early morning to sunset but it closes over the Christmas period and during times of very bad weather - announcements are made on their website advising of this. Follow the track on and round to the right. There's a large trailer here for photos over the fenceline. You get a good overall view of the base here, with anything parked on both northern and southern aprons readable, but the more eastern aprons are a bit distant. A fantastic and very popular place, especially when 11 is in use for those landing shots, please make sure you pay the very small entrance fee, as it goes towards keeping this field open for us all. Turn left out of John's Field and after a short walk you'll reach Pollards Lane crash gate. I advise walking rather than driving as there's nowhere to park your car safely without blocking the crash gate. This gives you a different angle on the northern aprons, and a much better view of the southern ones.

    Other Spotting Areas
  • From John's Field above, turn right out of it onto Pollards Lane and take the first left onto Jarman's Lane. Turn left at the end onto West Row Road and shortly on the left is the first pull in on this road. Due to the way aircraft are sometimes parked on this southern area, it can be difficult to log them. There are several pull ins, lay-bys and crash gates along this road that will help you log any that you weren't able to get from John's Field or the Pollards Lane crash gate above.

  • You'll then pass some fields and enter Mildenhall town. At the mini roundabout, turn left onto the A1101, head straight over the mini roundabout and turn left at the next mini roundabout onto Hampstead Avenue. Ignoring the various business entrances, take the second road on the right, Folly Road, and follow it to the end. Park well clear of the crash gate, there's plenty of room. You can log anything parked on the eastern apron right next to this gate, plus anything parked beyond them. You also get a good view of the northern aprons that were a bit distant from John's Field.

  • If there's anything parked on these northern ramps that you still need to get, head back to the mini roundabout and turn left onto the A1101. Follow the road round the perimeter, parallel with the runway, and take the next right onto St John's Street. Park up sensibly and walk back to the perimeter fence. A bit of walking should get you everything you need. As you turned left onto the A1101 you drive past a small copse. Walking through the copse will get you to the mound. High enough for photos over the fence, it's excellent for 29 ops, but I don't know where you would park your car in order to get here.

    MONEWDEN-CHERRY TREE FARM AIRFIELD

    Spotting Info
Head west out of Monewden village on Curch Road and turn left at the crossroads. Follow the road round a sharp right bend and after a road on the left, the strip is on the left. Friendly, ask for access. Keep an eye out for Yak 52 G-BVVW, it's often parked halfway along the main runway, well away from the hangars.

    NAYLAND-HILL FARM AIRFIELD

    Spotting Info
Head north out of Nayland on A134 and at B1087 crossroads turn left (NOT onto B1087). Take the next right and strip is on the right, just drive through the farm. Friendly, ask in clubhouse for access. It's best if you get an escorted tour as there are aircraft tucked away in various buildings.

    RATTLESDEN AIRFIELD

    Spotting Info
Head southwest out of Poyston Green (a village south of Rattlesden village), on Baby Lane and turn left at the end. Ignore the first right turn and the entrance to the airfield is the next right, opposite Louse Lane on the left. The website says the entrance is at the west of the airfield on the Frensham-Brettenham Road but this would involve driving down an active runway - maybe either entrance is ok. If both entrances are locked but they are flying, you can park up and walk in. Very friendly, ask for access and you should get a guided tour.

    SHIPMEADOW-CHURCH FARM AIRFIELD

    SPROUGHTON AIRCRAFT STORAGE & SPARES

    Spotting Info
Head north on B1113 towards Sproughton and just as you enter the village, the entrance to the Hall is on the left, through an arch and up a long driveway. Although used to trade as Suffolk Aircraft Servicing, this is the owner's home, and therefore any visits must be prearranged, presumably through Everett Aero.

    WATTISHAM AIR BASE

    Spotting Info
Just off the B1078 east of Bildeston village, these viewing spots are marked in the Spotting in the UK download. Not many places to view round here, mainly at the various crash gates. Do not obstruct the gates under any circumstances and park well clear at all times.

  • On the northern perimeter that runs between Wattisham and Ringshall villages are two crash gates that give good views onto the main apron and of runway movements. The eastern of the two gates also looks towards the SAR Search and Rescue apron and hangar.

  • Follow the road west into Wattisham village and on the right hand bend, turn left at the triangle junction onto Crowcroft Road. Follow to the end for the crash gate but park up before the road narrows. This has the best views of 7 Battalion REME.

  • As you drive round the perimeter, check the various shelters dotted around as some may be open, or have aircraft in front of, or behind them. From Ringshall Stocks village head west on Lower Farm Road towards the base main entrance where you'll find XT617 Scout preserved as the gate guard. The Wattisham Flying Station Museum is located just inside the main air base security gate. There are no aircraft in their main building but you should be escorted to their hardened aircraft shelters (HAS) on the north side if you ask. Admission is free, though donations are welcome, and admission is via pre-booking only. I suggest when you book your visit you inquire about visiting their HAS to avoid disappointment on the day. The museum also has one open day a month which will also allow views of the Lightning cockpit, Gazelles and Hunter.
