PRESERVED & STORED AIRCRAFT IN WILTSHIRE - their locations are marked in the Spotting in the UK download

BOSCOMBE DOWN AIR BASE (EGDM) - TWR 130.75, APP 130.0

Spotting Info
Southeast of Amesbury town and well signposted, these preserved aircraft and viewing spots are marked in the Spotting in the UK download.
  • XL629 Lightning is the gate guard at the main entrace in the northwest of the base, and if you ask permission, they are usually ok with you photographing it. Keeping the perimeter fence on your left, head along Stockport Road. The first crash gate on the left looks out towards where the Boscombe Down Aviation Collection used to be. All that's left that's visible are Phantoms XT597 & XV401 side by side. Further on down the road in the scrapping area, and visible, are XS596 Andover and ZE433 BAC1-11 with G-ONAL Be200 also closed by, minus engines though this may not be visible.

  • Continue down Stockport Road again and where the road bends right, continue straight on down a track. TUrn left through Blue Gate and follow it up. As the track rises, you'll get a view of the main ramp to read them off with a good pair of binoculars.

  • Back to the right hand bend and turn left. Turn left onto the A345 and take the first left after a couple of fields. Follow the perimeter road which then leads away into Porton. At the first crossroads, turn left onto the A338 to Boscombe and drive through it into Allington. You will see an odd circular shaped building on the right. Turn left immediately after, onto Allington Track. You will soon see the base perimeter fence alongside you on the left. When the fence abruptly turns away from you, there is space here for you to pull off the road and park, and probably where others have already parked. You look right down runway 23 and you have views of the helicopter hangar beyond runway 17. Slight views of part of the main ramp, but not enough to log anything. You can read them off when taxiing in and out, and by walking along the public bridleway (an old railway line) you should be able to read most if not all that are parked on the main ramp. Keep walking until you reach the raised ground. ZH763 BAC1-11 is their research and development aircraft which doesn't fly that regularly so it may be parked outside during your visit.

    CHISELDON-DRAYCOT FARM AIRFIELD

    Spotting Info
If travelling south from the M4 along the A346 towards Marlborough take the right turn after the B4005 and just after the Esso garage on the right, signed HGV Testing Station. Straight over the crossroads and follow the road round to the left. About 1/4 mile further on, just as you come to the houses of Draycot Foliate, turn right - there's a name board saying Draycot Aerodrome. Keep on this road and after going through a farmyard it opens out into the strip with hangars both to the left of the road and in front of you. Friendly, ask for access.

    CHISELDON-LOWER UPHAM FARM AIRFIELD

    Spotting Info
About a mile further south on the A346 than the turn to Draycott Farm above, is a turn on the left marked Lower Upham. The farm is about 3/4 mile along here on the right. Friendly, ask for access. As you get to the main area, you'll see an individual hangar on the right, with a mesh front to be able to log the inmates. The building beyond it also contains some residents but isn't always open. Park sensibly here and walk alongside the grass taxiway. The building on your left often contains aircraft. Then head round to the left for the last hangar containing the majority of the residents. Also, a company in one of the farm buildings refurbishes gliders.

COLERNE AIRFIELD (EGUO) - TWR 120.075

    Spotting Info
Head east on the A420 out of Marshfield village and after a mile or two you'll enter The Shoe village. Turn right at the crossroads and the airfield will be on left after 1-2 miles. There are a couple of crash gates and verges to pull in if there are aircraft parked out on the apron. Follow the road and fence down this western perimeter and take the first left. This runs along the southern perimeter and will take you to an industrial area right next to the fence. A short drive along here you'll need to fork left to stay alonside the fence. It's an RAF airfield so no access but if anything's parked outside or flying they'll be visible from the fenceline - the hangar and apron are located in the centre of the airfield. Best to visit during the week when they may be flying - during University they fly Wednesday-Sunday and during holidays it's Monday-Friday.

    HULLAVINGTON AIRFIELD

    Spotting Info
Come off the M4 at J17 and head north on the A429. Past the army barracks entrance, past the end of runway 23 and take the next left, signposted Hullavington. As the road bends right, turn left, signposted Wellington Place, and 621 Volunteer Gliding Squadron's hangar is the first hangar you get to. The cockpit section of ZE681 is stored here. If you just turn up, it's hit and miss whether you're allowed round their hangar, though you should be allowed to look from outside it if it's open. Ask for access. If you contact them in advance to arrange a tour, they're usually happy to accommodate your visit if someone is available. On the drive up to the hangar you get views across the airfield of any movements and aircraft and gliders parked outside.

    KEEVIL AIRFIELD - A/G 129.975

    Spotting Info
Just south of the village and signposted. The Gliding Club are very friendly, ask for access, though the gate is normally locked when no one is present. If someone is available, you can ask for a guided tour of the restoration and workshop area containing a lot of old gliders. Make sure you ask to climb the steps to see BGA1115 and WZ793 - the latter has lots of wings on top of it so is difficult to see. LONGBRIDGE DEVERILL-WING FARM AIRFIELD & GALAXY MICROLIGHTS WORKSHOPS

    Spotting Info
Head west out of Longbridge Deverill village and the strip is on the left. Owners are cautious due to people wandering around without permission. You MUST ask in order to enter workshops and hangars - if they are shut, stay away from them and don't wander around the airfield. The Galaxy Microlights workshops are located at Broomclose Farm. Turn left out of Wing Farm airfield and the workshops are halfway along the Wing Farm runway on the right. You'll also see a gap in the hedges on the left for aircraft to cross the road. The owner of Galaxy Microlights, Mark Jones, is very friendly. Contact him in advance on 07841 614577 to arrange a tour and with a small donation he'll show you where all the various aircraft are hidden away.

OLD SARUM AIRFIELD (EGLS) - TWR 123.2

    Spotting Info
North of Salisbury, between A345 and A338. Very friendly airfield, permission for access to hangars or a guided tour usually given from control room but always ask in each hangar regardless. DON'T walk out on the grass unless specifically told otherwise. The permission for access does not include the grass area, you'll have to specifically ask for this as they're not keen on us walking amongst the residents. It's not really necessary anyway as most, if not all, can be logged by walking along the road. The hangar next to the clubhouse is for light aircraft. Behind this, this hangar is split in two - the western half is the CFM Shadow Centre, the eastern half contains the Autogyros - on the back wall of this Autogyro hangar is the wreckage of AT3 G-SRUM. You'll find the remains of Airvan G-CDYA, Jodel G-JRKD and an unknown blue flexwing outside this Autogyro hangar - if you know the identity of the flexwing, could you please let me know.

Also home to the Boscombe Down Aviation Collection, who, having moved here from Boscombe Down into a hangar, have been able to make their exhibits available for the public to look at, and in a lot of cases, climb into. A fanastic collection and well worth the £8.50 admission. Open November-February weekends 1000-1500, then from 5th March 2013 onwards Tuesday-Sunday and Bank Holiday Mondays 1000-1700. When you first drive into the airfield estate, you may see two helicopters in front of you beyond the gate. Inside the museum hangar, there is a ramp between the 1-11 and the Jindivik that takes you outside so you can photograph the helicopters.

    RIVAR HILL AIRFIELD

    Spotting Info
Head south out of Shalbourne village along River Road and after less than two miles the road straightens out. The entrance is on the left at the southern end of the airfield and is signposted. If they are launching from this end they'll be gliders and people present down here. They are friendly, ask to log their gliders. Once finished here, or if they're either not flying or launching from the north/clubhouse end of the airfield, read the instructions on the sign regarding when and how to drive up there and stick very closely to the edge. Ask in the clubhouse for access, very friendly.

    SOUTH WRAXALL AIRFIELD

    Spotting Info
Head east out of Bath on A4 and turn right onto the A363 to Bathford. You will then pass under a railway bridge and then turn left onto the road signposted to Kingsdown. After about a mile take the turning on the right signposted to South Wraxall. Before entering the village there are some very large iron gates on your right behind which is a long, broad avenue of trees. Park here and follow the public footpath, which takes you through the avenue of trees. On your left you will come to a small copse of trees and the residents are parked here in the open. To visit by car - head east out of Monkton Farleigh village towards South Wraxall and you'll pass a golf course on your right. As the road takes a sharp right, turn left here and follow the track through two fields, and opening and closing gates as you go. Follow the well used track and you'll arrive at the end of the runway. Look at the windsock for runway direction and, taking great care, drive along the very edge of the runway, keeping a lookout as you go. You'll then see the residents on your left parked under the trees.

    STOCKTON-GLEBE FARM AIRFIELD

    Spotting Info
Head east through Stockton, past a pub on your left and a church on your right. Take the next right, go over the level crossing and take the next right. Road runs parallel with the runway on your right and the workshop is at the end. Workshop with aircraft stored outside. The operator, Colson Aviation, does not like resident etc info published and was extremely upset when details were posted by a spotter on an email group. They used to allow visits on the very strict understanding that details were not reported and so now will not allow visits on any basis.

THRUXTON AIRFIELD (EGHO) - TWR 130.45

    Spotting Info
Just off the A303, west of Andover, follow signs for Thruxton Circuit. Airfield is in the middle of the racing circuit and accessed by the tunnel under the racetrack. Before you go through the tunnel park to the right of it by the control tower and walk up the steps in front of you. Log what you can from here then go through the tunnel. As you come out, on your right is a hangar and just past it you will see aircraft parked nose on. Follow the road round to the right and you will drive in between hangars. Keep looking left and right for gaps to log one or two more. At the end turn right - you can drive just past the front of this hangar so if it's open you will get a few more. Plus it will give you a good view of those parked out on the grass. As you drive back you'll have a view in to the open hangar next to the tunnel to pick up one or two more. You can try asking for access at any or all of these hangars, some will refuse but others have been known to be friendly (Aerofab are, as are one helicopter company) and allow you to enter.

    UPAVON AIRFIELD (EGDJ/UPV)

    Spotting Info
Head east out of town on A342 and airfield is on the right. From the main gate entrance you can see into the hangar if it's open. Ask for access at the security hut, they are friendly and it is often granted. If the barrier's down then you need to sign in with the guards at the adjacent barracks entrance. Alternatively, keep the airfield on your right and drive past the entrance. You can pull off the road on the right and you will see a public footpath going straight ahead. As you start to walk along this footpath you will see the trace of a path in the grass leading towards the airfield. Walk along this path and it leads you onto the airfield in front of the hangars where most of the gliders are parked in trailers. Friendly, make sure you ask for access before wandering around.

    WANBOROUGH-LOTMEAD FARM AIRFIELD

    Spotting Info
Just to the north of Redlands, below. Turn right out of Redlands and there is turning on the right signed 'Lotmead Business Park' or similar. It's facing the other direction so you may need to turn round at the strawberry picking entrance a little further up the road and just before the bridge if you miss it. Carry on past the houses until you get to a car park on your right. Turn left and it will take you past some cowsheds. Follow the road left and on your left is a hangar. The first half doesn't house aircraft, but the second half (entrance at the other end) houses Tiger Moths and a Whittaker MW7 tucked in behind them. Follow road round to right and you will see the runway straight ahead. Drive up to the threshold and there is a small hangar on the left with the other resident.
